“Coping with Change” Inspirational Outreach session at KSHS

Sixth form students at Kesteven and Sleaford High School (KSHS) took part in a workshop on dealing with change led by JET’s Regional Youth Programmes Manager (East of England) Eve Darwood and Major Liz Murray. The session began with Major Liz explaining how she has experienced – and coped with – a variety of changes, both in her military career in the RAF and Army, and also with a serious back injury sustained in a traumatic event which meant she had to re-learn how to walk.

Students then took part in workshop activities addressing key ideas of positive and negative changes, our control over change and our responses to it, and coping strategies to help us to deal with major life changes such as going to university and choosing a career.

Eve shared her experience of dealing with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, and how this has become a catalyst for positive change in her life.

The feedback after the session from students and staff was excellent:

This session has been really useful, and it was great to hear real-life experiences.” Rebecca, 16

It was really engaging, without being too pushy.” Isabella, 17

It was good hearing personal stories – they were really inspiring.” Steffi, 17

The students have really engaged well with this, and it is good to see them sharing their own experiences in group tasks.” Laura Shelley, Head of Year
