On 4th May the Level 1 Blue Skies students had their final trip out before their presentation day – a visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). The day was certainly a big occasion as these aircraft and their crew hold a lot of meaning to both the older and younger generations.
The students were greeted by the staff of the BBMF and Sqn Leader Andrew Millikin “Millie” who spoke to the students of his journey to becoming a pilot in the RAF. Then Ret. Sqn Leader Ken Myers told us his story of growing up and playing in the streets of London as a child and then becoming an RAF pilot, reaffirming that anyone can achieve anything with hard work.
After this introduction the students were shown around the World War II aircraft, including Spitfires and Lancaster bombers. The students were told of the vital role these aircraft played in the war and how they helped secure the future we live in today.
Teamwork has been the key learning outcome on the Level 1 course and this trip really was a great place to emphasise this theme. Ken told great stories about just how vital teamwork was during the war and how the crew needed to work together not only to achieve their objective, but to keep each other alive. The trip was concluded with a great story about Andy Mynarski VC.
The students can’t stop talking about how good the trip was and they all thank “Millie” and Ken for the day.
