Navigating in Cwm Idwal

Navigating in Cwm Idwal

A few weeks ago, pupils from Ysgol Y Tywyn took part in an indoor climbing session. Today they were off to Cwm Idwal to develop their climbing skills to the next level as part of the Armed Forces Covenant “Gallwn / Yes we can” project.

At Tin Can Alley there is a perfect slab for beginners to try outdoor climbing. There are no man made holds so the pupils can only use the naturel grooves and holes that are formed in the rock. This is a challenge but once again the pupils at Y Tywyn were keen to have a go.

“All we need is a true belief in what we can achieve together and then a genuine commitment to try.” John Heaton,  Eagle House

They demonstrated excellent encouragement and support for those who needed it and genuine praise and delight for those who reached their target height.

“At first when I looked at the wall it was really scary but when I started to climb it was really exciting.” Angel, 11

The pupils were split into two groups on arrival. Whilst one group were climbing, the second group worked on navigation and leadership skills.

The pupils were taught how to read a map correctly using the key and a compass to ensure they walking in the right direction.

The pupils headed up towards Llyn Idwal taking it in turns to lead and pin point to the group exactly where they were on the map.

“I enjoyed navigating because I enjoyed learning to use a compass.” Zeke, 10

The pupils demonstrated superb listening skills to John from Eagle House and concentred on the task set. They communicated very well with each other and worked well as a team to get the whole group up and down the mountain  safely.

“This is the best trip ever because we got to go outside and explore.” Bobby, 10
