Yet another worthwhile session with the fabulous students from Ysgol Llanfawr, Holyhead. This week Horizon Nuclear came to visit the students at school to run a STEM session. The main aim of the session was for pupils to build a bridge. Sounds easy enough, however the group were split into two and were then asked to build one half of the bridge which needed to meet in the middle but they were not allowed to see what the other group were doing. After the brief, each group had to choose a leader and look at examples of suitable bridge designs. It was then up to the group to choose a leader who needed to designate jobs to each member. These jobs included designing, creating elements to be used in the structure and construction.
“I’ve put straws into the paper tubes to make the structure stronger.” Sam, aged 10
Once the groups had completed their half of the bridge they came together to secure both halves to create one bridge. To test the stability of the bridge the students asked if they could drive a toy car over the bridge.
“After today’s session I feel like anything is possible.” Riley, aged 10
During the session, both groups demonstrated excellent communication, teamwork and enthusiasm to complete the challenge.
“The students have been one of the best groups I have worked with. They have used good communication and have done really well to build their bridge in the short time they’ve had.” Steve, Horizon Nuclear
