Our Blue Skies Level 2 students enjoyed a fantastic Survival Skills session held at RAF Valley and Holyhead pool on 23rd November.
The morning session was all about preparing the students for the afternoon task in the pool: a simulated plane crash into the sea and how to survive. Sgt Neil Madden asked the students what key skills would be needed in the task. The students decided that leadership, teamwork and communication were essential and they discussed how these could be carried out effectively.
After a safety briefing, Flt Lt Muscat (Musky) delivered a dry run practice of the plane crash simulation in the gym. The students were encouraged to carry out head counts often and to look for essential equipment floating in the sea, such as a first aid kit, water and food. The need for a strong leader is essential in this situation; the students discussed what qualities a good and bad leader has and what qualities would be required in the afternoon session.
At Holyhead pool, the students were kitted out in flying suits, helmets and life jackets. They realised how heavy all the equipment was especially when Musky demonstrated how the base of the pilot’s seat would be attached as well, as that carries the life raft.
As it was a simulated air crash, the students pretended that they were parachuting towards the sea. On a count of 5, each student had to pull their life jacket pin and then jump into the water. It was surprising how noisy the life jackets were when they were activated! The students then had to swim to the large life raft and help get everyone in. Jess, 14 said “I was part of the team. I had to help everyone stay safe and be responsible for others. We got everyone in the raft, everyone worked together and we listened to the leader.”
Once inside, a leader was nominated; Jordan had to delegate tasks such as baling the water out and closing the doors when there was a storm (Mrs Owen with the hosepipe!). Unfortunately, Jordan unexpectedly fell overboard so a new leader had to step up quickly and organise someone to rescue Jordan. The students thoroughly enjoyed the task although some said it was stiflingly hot in the raft. Speaking about his experience of being a leader, Jordan 15 said “I had to give clear instructions. I told everyone what to do like baling out the water and closing the doors.”
The students then had the opportunity to try and turn the large life raft over as it often inflates upside down. They also could sit in the one-man life raft which lives inside the pilot’s seat. The students really enjoyed the session while improving their understanding of what makes a good leader and how a team can work effectively. Shaun, 14 commented “I enjoyed everything and I learned more about being a team member. I made sure I knew the drills and that I could help my friends.”
Thank you very much to Musky and Neil for delivering a fantastic, real-life experience for the students. Thank you also to Holyhead pool, Schmidt and BAE Systems for the equipment.
