Our Level 3 Blue Skies students enjoyed an interesting and thought-provoking day delivered by Warrant Officer Beattie and Sgt Madden. The students were asked to complete a Strength Deployment Inventory, which helps you assess the strengths you use in relating to others.
After completing a series of questions, the students were able to understand what motivates them when things are going well; some students were more motivated in looking after and nurturing others, while others had a stronger desire to collaborate and adapt to other people or situations.
WO Beattie and Sgt Madden discussed the findings, demonstrating how being self-aware leads to greater understanding, acceptance, tolerance, effectiveness in relationships and a greater appreciation of one’s self and others. This was related to the students’ friendships at school, when working in a team and on work experience.
All the students found it hugely beneficial, with Aoife, 15, saying “I feel like I’ve learnt things about myself that I didn’t know before.”
This session was followed by a presentation about Diversity and Equality, delivered by WO Beattie. The students were encouraged to think about the different groups of people who are in a school. They recognised how diverse their school was and how all groups should be treated equally. WO Beattie played video clips of some challenging situations and the students discussed the rights and wrongs of how different people were treated or reacted. It was an extremely thought-provoking discussion and it tied in well with the Strength Development Inventory work where the students could review how they would react in those circumstances.
Jaimie, 15 said”I feel more confident on who I am and what I am best at when I am in certain situations.”
