Our North Wales Blue Skies Level 1 students had a fantastic day bouldering and climbing at Indy Climbing Wall on 9th November. This session tied in superbly with our teamwork focus; the students worked in teams of three to belay a member of their group who was climbing the wall.
Some of the students were very reticent to begin with, but by the end of the day, all the students had achieved a climb, with many reaching the top. They had to trust their team to hold on to the ropes tightly while they abseiled down the wall. It was great to hear the encouragement and support the students showed each other; a vital part of teamwork.
The main objective of the day was for the students’ self-confidence to grow, and this was certainly achieved. All of the students felt proud of their achievements, justifiably so.
Asked how they felt after the activities, this is what some of the young people had to say:
“I was scared of heights at first and I tried really hard to go a tiny bit higher. I encouraged people to try their best and I helped people as well.” Atia, 13
“I was able to trust other people with my own safety.” Ellie, 13
“I showed I listened by tying knots and bouldering / climbing correctly.” Daniel, 13
Thank you to John, Fraser and Sgt Kerr from JSMTC Indefatigable and Indy Climbing Wall.
