Safeguarding and Child Protection Statement

Our Commitment to Safeguarding at JET

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people who engage with our activities. We believe that every child and young person, regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or background, has the right to feel safe, be protected from harm, and be treated with dignity and respect.

We have a duty to protect and promote the welfare of all children and young people under the age of 18. This includes those who participate in our activities both on and off site, as well as those we engage with through partner organisations.

We take a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of abuse, including online abuse, and are committed to ensuring that all safeguarding concerns are taken seriously and responded to appropriately and without delay. Our safeguarding culture prioritises the safety, wellbeing, and best interests of children and young people at all times.

Our safeguarding arrangements apply to everyone involved in our organisation, including staff, volunteers, trustees, partners, and visitors.

Safeguarding Policy

Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy outlines how we keep children and young people safe and how we respond to concerns. The policy is regularly reviewed and updated in line with UK legislation and statutory guidance, including:

  • Children Act 1989 and 2004
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025
  • Data Protection Act 2018
  • Human Rights Act 1998

The policy sets out clear procedures for recognising, responding to, recording, and reporting safeguarding concerns, and establishes designated safeguarding roles within the organisation.

We are committed to:

  • Creating a safe, positive, and supportive environment
  • Ensuring all staff and volunteers are trained and understand their responsibilities
  • Encouraging a culture where concerns can be raised openly and safely
  • Working in partnership with families, carers, and statutory agencies
  • Taking immediate and appropriate action to protect children and young people

Recognising and Responding to Concerns

All staff and volunteers are trained to follow four key safeguarding principles:

Recognise – React – Record – Report

They are expected to:

  • Be alert to signs that a child or young person may be at risk of harm
  • Listen carefully and take all concerns seriously
  • Record information accurately and promptly
  • Report concerns immediately to a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

We recognise that abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect, and that it can happen in person or online.

How to Report a Safeguarding Concern at JET

If you are worried about a child or young person, it is important to tell someone. You do not need to be certain—if something doesn’t feel right, you should report it.

Who can report a concern?
Anyone can raise a concern, including:

  • Children and young people
  • Parents, carers, and family members
  • Staff and volunteers
  • Members of the public

How to report a safeguarding concern
Concerns can be reported in a number of ways, including:

  • Speaking to a member of staff or volunteer
  • Contacting us directly by email or phone
  • You can email us at info@joneggingtrust.org.uk or phone us on 0300 123 3044

All safeguarding concerns are passed to a trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), who will assess the situation and take appropriate action. This may include seeking advice, making a referral to local safeguarding services, or contacting the police.

There are three JET DSL’s:

  • Director of Impact and Engagement
  • Area Director South
  • Area Director Central

  What happens next?

  • Your concern will be taken seriously
  • You will be listened to and treated with respect
  • Information will be handled sensitively and shared only where necessary to keep people safe
  • Action will be taken as quickly as possible

If a child is in immediate danger
If you believe a child or young person is at immediate risk of harm, you should contact emergency services immediately by calling 999.

Making Safeguarding Accessible

We are committed to ensuring that safeguarding information is:

  • Easy to find on our website
  • Written in a way that is clear and understandable
  • Accessible to children and young people as well as adults

We actively encourage children, young people, and adults to speak up if they are worried about themselves or someone else. All concerns will be taken seriously and handled appropriately.

Working Together to Keep Children Safe

Safeguarding is a shared responsibility. We work closely with partner organisations, schools, families, and statutory agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes for children and young people.

We expect all partner organisations to have appropriate safeguarding measures in place and to share our commitment to high standards of safeguarding practice.
